Elements of vestimentary culture of Alienacquire new meaning, become markers of otherness, strangeness. The most vivid marker in the modern era becomes, ironically, the hijab. If before, the hijab was a symbol of backwardness, religious oppression, low status and violence against women, at the present time it is not only the object of a significant and highly controversial discourse, but alsoРµСЂСѓpretext to the political provocations and legal conflicts. Hijab at the moment is becoming quite a complex character, burdened with many semantic loadings. The article identifies the following characteristics of hijab: religious affiliation, affectively gender, the search for a compromise, a status, a new social reference points, a marker of strangeness and analyzed their main features. Our assumptions were supported by results of the sociological survey of the youth of the Astrakhan State University ( sample size of 100 people) and in-depth interviews. As a result of our research, we came to the conclusion that the symbolism of the hijab as a marker becomes ambivalent.
