Special attention is paid to the theory of American expert on the «NibelungenledВ» Winder MacConnell who, relying on key concepts of the identity theory by Karl Jung, offered a convincing analysis of psychological images of the characters of the poem and their motivations. The ideas of the article are illustrated with examples from the original text of the poem (manuscripts B and partially A) according to the Stuttgart edition of 1892, the literary translation of examples is given in Yu. B.
