In the article is considered a unique phenomenon in the history of nation-building in our country – the autonomization of the Russian (Cossack) of the population in national regions (Autonomous regions) of the Northern Caucasus in the 20th years of the XXth century. The author notes that the development of local self-government in the multinational regions of Russia at the present stage should take into account the accumulated in the past positive experience.
